If you’re dreaming of a career in Disability Care or Aged Care, the time is now. The demand is growing, and the opportunities are real. But here’s the thing — to stand out and land the job quickly, you need to be job-ready, compliant, and confident. At Ethical Hire, we've helped a thousand of support workers secure roles with top providers across Australia. So, what’s the secret?
It all starts with having the right certifications — and keeping them up to date.
Here’s your ultimate checklist
Disability Support Worker Screening Check
Why it matters: Confirms you’re safe, eligible, and cleared to work in NDIS-funded roles. How to get it: Apply online through your state’s NDIS Screening Unit. Pro tip: Save your check number and expiry date — it’s one of the first things employers ask for.
Working With Children Check (WWCC)
If you’ll be working with children or youth, this is mandatory. Apply through your state government (e.g., Service Victoria). Don’t delay — it can take a few days to process.
100 Points of ID
Yes, it’s real. Yes, you need it. Combine documents like your passport, Medicare card, and driver’s license to hit the 100-point requirement. Always check with 100 Points of ID checklist to see if you are getting the requirement.
Qualifications
Most roles require at least a Certificate III in Individual Support, Disability, or Aged Care or Relevant Degree. If you haven’t started yet, explore short courses or funded traineeships — there are flexible options available.
First Aid & CPR (HLTAID011 + HLTAID009)
These are non-negotiable and can safe someone’s life
- First Aid: Renew every 3 years. Very important to keep them up to date.
- CPR: Renew annually
Australian Work Rights
Whether you’re a citizen, PR, or visa holder — employers need proof. Upload your VEVO check, passport, or visa grant notice to confirm your work eligibility.
Driver’s License
While not mandatory for every role, having a driver’s license is a big advantage — especially if you will be supporting clients with community access. If you’re using your own vehicle, be sure it’s covered by comprehensive car insurance.
Orientation Module
Free. Online. Quick. This module teaches you how to support participants with respect, safety, and confidence. You will know about choice control, how to support Safe and Efficient Meals, Communication and provide a great care.
Bonus Skills (Optional, But Highly Recommended)
- Infection Control Training – Helps keep you and your clients safe
- Safe Waste Management – Great for personal care and in-home settings
